Richardson enjoyed being transported to local dinner parties in a sedan chair carried by liveried footmen (otherwise employed as his pupils or assistants), and he loved sitting of an evening at his fortepiano singing his way through sea shanties or The Beggar’s Opera. All this was done in a spirit which combined devoted scholarship with a sense of fun, and stands in the finest tradition of English eccentricity. |
