ITKsJRYqtv Autore: Brooks We're at university together using virasolve when pregnant Colin Matthews has assembled some 20 minutes of music from six radio plays co-produced by the BBC and CBS, originally titled An American in England and here re-styled as Britten in Wartime. None of it, unsurprisingly, is top-drawer stuff on a level with, say, the Sinfonia da Requiem Britten had composed two years earlier. Yet every tiniest snippet shows his trademark sureness of touch with harmony and orchestral colour, and some of the longer pieces have real verve. There is even a startling, though surely coincidental, echo of Shostakovich’s ‘Invasion’ theme. |
